Happy Anniversary, Part 1

August 19, 2011

About a year ago Delta and I went to the wedding of two good college friends with one of the most beautiful love stories I’ve ever heard. The groom is a Marines Corp. officer. They met while studying abroad and continued a long distance relationship for three years.

When the best man gave his speech, he ended it with a perfect phrase to sum up a military marriage:

“Love isn’t about proximity, it’s about promise.”

I’ve repeated this to myself almost every day for the past year. More that anything else — more than the shoulders of family members, more than knowing nods from other military wives, more than the smile on Baby Girl’s face when she sees her daddy on the computer screen — this gives me hope. There are times I need strength and times I need comfort, some days I just need to picture what’s ahead.

We promised each other forever, but we knew the real promise was someday.

Happy Anniversary,

with love, with hope, with promise.
